Massimo Santanicchia is Professor and Dean of the Architecture at the Iceland University of the Arts. He holds a MArch from Universitario di Architettura di Venezia; an MA in Housing and Urbanism from the Architectural Association, School of Architecture in London; and an MSc in Regional Urban Planning Studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science. in 2022 he completed his PhD in Cultura Studies and Education and Diversity at the University of Iceland with the dissertation titled: Becoming cosmopolitan citizen-architects, A reflection on architectural education in a Nordic-Baltic perspective.
Massimo understanding of architecture is the result of his multicultural and multidisciplinary experiences in learning, teaching, researching, and practicing architecture and design, acquired by working with different universities, firms, countries, and people.
He has researched extensively on architectural education and advocated for the need to advance its language and pedagogy to make it more respondent to the grand challenges and published on these in multiple academic papers and presented at numerous conferences. His research draws upon literature on justice, citizenship, feminism, post-humanism, and cosmopolitanism to rethink architectural education and its practice in the Icelandic context and beyond.
