90-minute online session on A.I. in Architectural Design Education
Speakers: Pietro Scarpa, Ivo Vrouwe, Gary Miley
- Pietro Scarpa is a Senior Architect at UNStudio, where he leads design strategy across various project phases. As a key member of the UNS AI research team, he investigates how artificial intelligence can be integrated in the design processes while critically investigating the ethical and philosophical implications of this technology. Dedicated to bridging the gap between practice and academia, he teaches Master’s level courses at the Academies of Tilburg and Amsterdam, guiding students through both the 'how' and the 'why' of AI in design
- Ivo Vrouwe is a professor of practice (lector) in professional development and educational design at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. With a background in architecture, design, and engineering, he researches transdisciplinary approaches to vocational education. His work in professional development explores value‑sensitive educational design and the responsible integration of generative AI. In his applied research, he focuses on participatory methodologies and systemic co‑design, with particular attention to learning communities operating within the quadruple helix.
- Garry Miley is an architect and lecturer at South East Technological University (SETU), Ireland, where he teaches architectural design, history, and the application of AI in architectural education and practice. His research focuses on how emerging AI tools are reshaping design studio culture, architectural judgement, and pedagogy. He writes regularly on architecture and technology for Type and Architecture Ireland and an OpEd he authored recently appeared in The Examiner.

- Peggy Winkels is a practicing architect and lecturer at Hasselt University, devoted to empathic design, intercultural collaboration, and regenerative architecture.
'I coordinate academic programmes such as the Global Perspectives master’s studio and the Building Beyond Borders postgraduate certificate, creating spaces for shared learning across borders. In practice, I seek to enrich everyday life through freehand sketching, urban storytelling, and socially engaged design. I have collaborated with various architectural firms and am currently part of the AIDarchitecten team.' - Mike Haslam is director at Haslam & Co Architects (HCoA) and formerly co-director at Solearth Architecture in Dublin. A graduate of the Universities of Edinburgh, Bath and TUDublin, he is a registered architect and member of the RIAI, RIBA and the IGBC.
He has worked with UK practices FCB-Studios and Edward Cullinan Architects; in Germany with Boge Lindner-Boge and Urban Projekt; and in Spain with Estudio Gazapo Lapayese. His work at HCoA/Solearth includes the award-winning Airfield Estate, the Daintree Building and Grow HQ.
Mike is a lecturer and studio leader at SABE, TU Dublin and has been a committed exponent of sustainable design for over 25 years. He has published papers on architecture and green design with research including applications of round-wood structures; Slow Architecture; Building Biology and Natural Ventilation strategies as part of NZEB.

90-minute session on Feedback and the Studio Model
Speakers: Şebnem Yücel, Harriet Harriss
- Şebnem Yücel’s research focuses on current topics with a critical historical agenda. She questions the representation of places and buildings, and concentrates on modernization in non-western contexts. Her teaching in architectural history and theory anchors around the reconfiguration of keywords like modern, metropole and region and aims to highlight dynamic cultural and disciplinary conditions within increasingly global practices that are embedded in localities. Yücel received her B.Arch (1993) from Middle East Technical University, Turkey, MSc. Arch (1998) from University of Cincinnati, and Ph.D. (2003) from Arizona State University with a concentration on History, Theory and Criticism. She is currently teaching at MEF University’s Architecture Department in Istanbul and serving as the dean of its Faculty of Arts, Design and Architecture.
- Harriet Harriss - a Professor at Pratt Institute, a Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Architecture in Johannesburg, South Africa and a qualified Death Doula - has established an international reputation for pioneering scholarship that draws upon feminist, post-humanist, and anti-colonial theories in efforts to advance pedagogies, policies, and professional practice. Dr. Harriss' is also an award winning writer, whose recent titles include Architectural Pedagogies of the Global South, Architects Afterlife: the multi-sector Impact of an Architecture Degree and 100 Women Architects in Practice - the latter of which was voted one of the Top 10 Architecture and Design Books of 2024. Her practice work is explored within residencies including Arctic Circle (2024), Institute of Public Architecture (2024), Taconic Fellowship (2025-26) and Kingsland Wildflower Residency (2026) and focuses on death, dying, ecological grief, and architectural afterlives; topics that form the the subject of her next book, An Incomplete Atlas of Death & Dying Architectures (2027).
In person event: 11& 12 June 2026
Two-day event in TU Delft. In person event on Studio Teaching
Co Ordinators: Elise van Dooren, Bob van Vliet and Roel van de Pas
- Elise van Dooren enjoys teaching design and is fascinated by the question of how to teach. Almost immediately after her study architecture at Delft University of Technology, she also started teaching. First as a guest lecturer, later as a faculty member in a variety of educational projects and roles, such as coordinator, chair of the education board and educational developer and advisor. Her fascination for the design education, resulted in a PhD and the development of courses for students and teachers on design didactics. (TU Delft, Academies in Groningen and Tilburg, Technasium).
- Bob van Vliet has worked in product, graphic, and interaction design and has taught at TU Delft since 2009, first at Industrial Design Engineering and later at Architecture and Mechanical Engineering. He has extensive teaching experience in a wide range of settings at both the BSc and MSc level, from small scale studios to large enrollment courses. Ever since is own student days, he has been interested in design pedagogy and design theory and methodology more broadly.
Programme:
11 June 2026
9:00-12.30: An overview of the various elements—the essential basic skills- in the design process. This is what designers do and what you, as an instructor, need to discuss with your students
13.30 -17.00: The fundamental attitude in design is an open attitude toward experimentation: exploring, investigating, and evaluating; testing and comparing ideas
12 June 2026
9:00-12.30: Design is knowledge-based. It involves studying, discovering, and applying relevant knowledge, as well as experimenting with knowledge—often in the form of principles or patterns.
13.30 -17.00: Design gains value and meaning through a guiding theme. Experimentation is focused on developing and elaborating on a theme.
>> Each session consists of a combination of theory (lecture) and practical exercise
