Crowdfunding for independent European architecture journals

The three established peer-reviewed open access journals Dimensions, Spool, and PlaNext form together the TIB Architecture 2026–29 Bundle for this crowdfunding campaign supported by the KOALA framework.

This call to put in shares to enable DIAMOND open access European journals in the architecture and urbanism field is directed to Architecture Schools and - especially - to University Libraries. They spend their budget for open access mostly for large global companies active in journal publishing, in many cases without consideration of discipline-specific cultures in architecture and urbanism. With KOALA, independent European journals can get a chance to access this budget and respond better to the research cultures of architecture and urbanism. With the DIAMOND open access concept, there are no fees for authors and no fees for readers.

Please tell your university libraries about this crowdfunding initiative and how important it is especially for the emerging generation of researchers.

The crowdfunding through KOALA enables the three journals for a period of 3 years, from 2027 to 2029, to have security in their editorial and publishing work and to allow the DIAMOND open access. The crowdfunding campaign (pledging) is running until 30 September 2026. Only if the envisaged total sum for the bundle of Dimensions, Spool, and PlaNext is brought together until then, the funding will effectively happen. 

Therefore, it is very important to bring in shares by University Libraries - and also by Schools if possible, even small ones of 1,000–3,000 per year.
